The Lyons Mail (1916 Film), The Lyons Mail
''The Lyons Mail'' is a 1931 British historical mystery adventure film directed by Arthur Maude and starring John Martin Harvey, Norah Baring, and Ben Webster. It was based on the 1877 play ''The Lyons Mail'' by Charles Reade which in turn was based on his 1854 play ''The Courier of Lyons''. The film was also released under the alternative title ''Courrier de Lyon''. It had previously been made into a 1916 silent film ''The Lyons Mail''. The story is based on the Courrier de Lyon case. It was shot at the Twickenham Studios in London. Filmed in 1930, it was to be leading actor John Martin-Harvey's only sound film. Arthur John Maude (23 July 1880 – 9 January 1950) was an English actor, screenwriter, and film director. Biography Maude was born Arthur John Maud on 23 July 1880 in Pontefract, West Riding, Yorkshire, to William Robert Maud (1849–1919) and his wife Lucy Monkman (1853–1929).''Birth and death certificates for Arthur John Maud, William Robert Maud and Lucy Maud (née Monkman)'' on file with the General Register Office for England and Wales. He would make the claim in later years that he was also the nephew of British general Sir Frederick Stanley Maude, the World War I hero of the Mesopotamia campaign, but this is not supported by British census returns and vital records. ''The Lyons Mail'' is a 1916 British silent film based on the 1877 play ''The Lyons Mail'' by Charles Reade, a very popular stage work of the Victorian era. A respectable French gentleman is mistaken for his doppelganger, a notorious highwaymen. It was made by the Ideal Film Company, one of the leading British silent film studios. Earl Grey is a title in the peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1806 for General Charles Grey, 1st Baron Grey. In 1801, he was given the title Baron Grey of Howick in the County of Northumberland, and in 1806 he was created Viscount Howick in the County of Northumberland, at the same time as he was given the earldom. Charles Ernest Paton (31 July 1874 – 10 April 1970) was an English film actor. He joined the circus at 14, and had early stage and music hall experience. He appeared in more than 100 films between 1927 and 1952, including ''Freedom of the Seas''. In 1927, he appeared in a short film, made in the DeForest Phonofilm sound-on-film process, singing "If Your Face Wants to Smile, We'll Let It In" from the revue ''John Citizen's Lament''.
